Schools in the Los Angeles and Glendale unified districts are closed on April 24th to observe Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day. This day marks the 108th anniversary of the tragic events regarded by historians as the first genocide of the 20th century, with up to 1.5 million Armenians killed. In recognition, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that allows public schools and community colleges to close in honor of this significant day. Commemorative events include rallies, such as the "Armenian Genocide Commemorative Rally for Justice" in Little Armenia, and Glendale's 22nd annual event at the Alex Theatre, focusing on themes of historical awareness and resilience.
