News Image News Image The Marvel series "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" has become a focal point for visual effects criticism ahead of its premiere, especially concerning the CGI representation of its lead character, She-Hulk. Concerns have been raised about the character's visual appearance, which sits in the "uncanny valley," partly due to distressing industry reports about the working conditions faced by VFX artists on Marvel projects. Director Kat Coiro attributes some of the backlash to societal attitudes toward women's bodies, noting the challenge of translating a comic book physique into a realistic, yet fantastical, depiction on screen. She mentions that the character's design was inspired by Olympian athletes rather than bodybuilders, aiming to create a more approachable representation while acknowledging that critiques would likely arise no matter the approach taken.

Showrunner Jessica Gao, along with director Coiro and lead actress Tatiana Maslany, have voiced their support for VFX artists. Gao emphasized the enormity of creating a CGI main character and expressed concern about the demanding workload VFX teams face. Coiro and Maslany echoed similar sentiments, stressing their respect for the VFX artists’ skills and the need to improve their work conditions. The series, which will debut on Disney+ on August 18, 2022, features a star-studded cast, including Mark Ruffalo, Tim Roth, and Benedict Wong.
